Tokyo: Dalai Lama meets the Chinese Press

at the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan (Tokyo)

I will point out some bits I found interesting... of course what I read in the news today about yesterdays meeting is again only a small portion of the whole... why does the media only report on just a few quotes taken out of context - "The Chinese government considers me a troublemaker, so it is my duty to create more trouble" - guys, that was a half cynical, half-jokingly comment!!!!

I don't read about the important things: How he really called up the responsibility of journalists to write about reality. How he pointed out, that China is a coutry without freedom of press. How again pointed out, that he doesn't care about the 15th Dalai Lama, that he wishes that Chinese media doesn't always "overpoliticize" his abroad travels, how he keeps communication with the Chinese and the Chinese media.

"Compassion" vs. "Greed"

In his Speech, the Dalai Lama talked about the crisis and how important it is to make a new effort towards a more universal approach "We are on world" when facing today`s challenges such as the crisis and global warming. The values needed for that shouldn`t be based on values of just one religion or religious values, but common sense, warmheartedness and compassion.

This crisis is a result of too much greed and he further explains "intelligence guided by hatred and jealousy leads to destruction" He pointed out that today's rather "industrial-oriented" education "should include warm-heartedness and compassion"and called for scientists and researchers to investigate on a curriculum that makes people all over the world able to act like that. "World peace can only come through a person's inner peace".

.

The old and new issue - a few words on China and Tibet and compassion

What I find extremely impressive about Dalai Lama is his continous attempts to communication with China even though his people have a hard time under the Chinese regime and no freedom of religion, always in fear of losing their identity.

He mentioned one example of a Tibetan monk whom he met after this monk was released out of a long-time imprisonment in a Communist gulag. When asks about his biggest fear during that time, the monk answered, "losing my compassion towards these enemies."

China and the media - "Please got to Tibet and China and see for yourself!"

Shortly before he left, the Dalai Lama pointed his finger towards two Chinese journalists from Xin Hua agency and directly told them: "You have no freedom in China!" At the same time he called upon the attending journalists "Please go to China, get there and make sure you travel freely, investigate freely, see the reality on the spot, the real situation. Because right now, transparency is lacking, information is just too one-sided, rather propaganda.

Clear words ... and hand shakes

When the Dalai Lama was entering the press conference he immediately greeted "his friends" of Xin Hua. What he said you can read in newspapers world wide and I just mentioned a few of it above. But more interesting is what happened after the conference and I was impressed to see that - sitting right in front of. The Dalai Lama went to those two journalists after his address, shook their hands and bowed in front of them. The Chinese journalists could have been offended, disgusted, mad anything after such clear words. But, no - they were smiling. To me from the outside, they looked like good friends after a "match of words." Please see for yourself.

and last but not least...

Another recent noble prize winner just refused to meet this noble prize winner.

Washington Post.

And here more on Japan Times.
